Canton was originally settled as Etowah in 1833, then renamed in 1834. Early entrepreneurs envisioned the small town as the future center of silk production in the West, and changed the town's name to reflect the Chinese city world renowned as the most producer of silk. Canton later became well-known instead for it's "Canton Denim", a high-quality denim produced in the town's cotton mills.

Modern day Canton has undergone significant construction and renovation, with one of the old cotton mills even being transformed into a new apartment community along the river. Thanks to the scenic environment and convenience to Atlanta, it's once again becoming a boom town for the 21st century.
