Roswell was originally settled when Roswell King built a cotton mill in the mid-1830s, soon to become the largest in North Georgia. Roswell was originally a part of Cobb County, but with the county seat of Marietta a four-hour (one way) horseback ride away, the city was incorporated in 1854. In 1931, difficult economic conditions drove neigboring Milton County to merge with Fulton County and Roswell was ceded by Cobb County to help facilitate the merger.

More recently, Roswell has developed into a thriving city with a quaint and charming historic district of shops and restaurants. Recent distinctions include being named by CNN as one of the best places to live in the US; Frommer's named Roswell as the 3rd best US city to raise a family; and City Crime Rankings named Roswell the 18th safest city in the US in it's 2006 annual release.
