Canton GA is located slightly northwest of Atlanta along Interstate 575, and with a population estimated at 17,685 in 2005, Canton is the county seat of Cherokee County.
Originally founded as Etowah, Canton adopted its current name in 1834 based on the famous city in China. Early businessmen sought to make the area the center of silk production in the West, and thus changed the city’s name to mirror the Chinese city world renowned as the largest and most famous producer of silk. Ironically, Canton later became well-known instead for its “Canton Denim”, a high-quality denim produced in the town’s cotton mills.
The old cotton mills of Canton have recently been transformed into a new apartment community along the Etowah river downtown and there has been much construction and renovation throughout the city. Canton has a scenic footprint in the north Georgia mountains and is once again becoming a thriving economic engine for the area.
