Marietta GA is northwest of Atlanta along Interstate 75 and is the county seat for Cobb County, boasting 61,261 residents in 2005. Marietta was founded around a town square in 1834 and quickly became the home of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. During his march through Georgia during the Civil War, General Sherman burned all but two buildings in torching the city.
Marietta has a wonderful town square built around a scenic park and hosts year around events in the park. Surrounding the park are lovely shops and great restaurants, making this a thriving downtown. The jewel of downtown is Theatre on the Square, and there’s the fantastic new Cobb Energy Centre for the Performing Arts, home of the Atlanta Opera and hosting many other events.
