Historically, the city dates back to the mid-1830s when Roswell King built a cotton mill near the current downtown area. Roswell was originally a part of neighboring Cobb County to the west and incorporated in 1854. At the time of incorporation, Roswell was a 4 hour horseback ride to the county seat in Marietta. During the height of the Great Depression in 1931, Cobb County ceded Roswell into neighboring Fulton County in order to more easily facilitate the merger of Milton County to the north into Fulton County.
Roswell has more recently garnered local and national attention with its great schools, parks and safe environment. Recent accolades include Frommer naming Roswell as the third best US city to raise a family; making CNN’s list of best places to live; and City Crime Rankings named Roswell the 18th safest city in the US in 2006. Roswell has many wonderful neighborhoods and a lovely downtown district with quaint shops and sidewalk restaurants. Roswell is also home to several great parks and provides its residents with numerous recreational programs along with activities specifically for active adults.
